Ilana Palmgren

(they/them) is a Finnish actor (FIA) and interdisciplinary performance artist based in Helsinki.
Palmgren holds a MA in Film and Theatre Acting from Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatory, Russia where they deeply immersed themself in the Stanislavsky system of acting. However, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Palmgren immediately returned to Finland in 2022 completing their studies at the Theatre Academy Helsinki.

Drawing on the classical Stanislavsky system, Palmgren combines traditional acting training with experimental performance art. Palmgren’s work is characterized by this on-going exploration and fusion allowing them to create performances that are both emotionally authentic and innovatively expressive. They have contributed to various productions not only as a performer but also in facilitating and shaping the overall artistic vision with experience in directing, writing and choreography.

My artistic practice with body, text and movement grows from the psycho-somatic actors craft into constantly evolving and breathing performance practice.

Deep emotions, delicate details and surprise on the stage intrigue me. In my artistic work details - that may seem minor or irrelevant - question social norms and structures. Dealing with themes like social injustice, gender-restrictive norms, life and death, there is always absurdity, grotesque humour and playfulness present.
